Drug-Resistant Bacteria Found in 40% of Supermarket Meat Samples

Strains of E. coli bacteria resistant to antibiotics were recently found in about 40% of samples collected from supermarkets in Spain. In addition, strains of E. coli known to cause severe illness were “highly prevalent” in the samples.

This does not seem to be an isolated issue as recent testing from Consumer Reports also found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in samples of ground beef, pork, and turkey in the U.S. Antibiotic-resistant Salmonella was most prevalent and is a bacteria thought to contribute to 420 deaths in the U.S. every year, according to the CDC.

Researchers involved in both of the above reports point to the overuse of antibiotics in farm animals as a main contributor to the problem. Often, meat producers give their animals low doses of antibiotics to prevent illness rather than administering them only after an animal is sick.

A few steps consumers can take to protect themselves is to look for meat from animals raised without antibiotics, thaw meat in the refrigerator, cook meat to the proper temperature, and wash hands thoroughly after touching raw meat.

Eating More Nuts May Improve Memory Late in Life

Eating about 60 grams of mixed nuts per day appears to increase blood flow to the brain and may improve memory for older adults, a recent study has found. Verbal memory (memory connected to spoken words) showed the most significant improvements.

The study involved 28 healthy participants who were an average age of 65 years old. They were divided into two groups— a control group and a group that consumed 60 g of mixed nuts per day. The groups kept their protocol for 16 weeks then switched diets after an 8-week break.

Overall, whichever group was consuming the nuts performed better on a verbal memory task, remembering about 16% more words. They also showed some improvements associated with brain vascular function, including better blood flow to several areas of the brain.

The researchers did not identify whether one specific type of nut may aid memory better than another, but the nuts consumed in the study were a mix of cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, and pistachios. 60 g is the equivalent of just over 2 ounces of nuts.

Toxic “Forever Chemicals” Are Commonly Present in Drinking Water

A group of synthetic chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are commonly found in drinking water across the U.S., the EPA warns. PFAS have been nicknamed ‘forever chemicals’ because they build up in the body and persist in the environment indefinitely. They are also linked to a number of negative health effects, including hormone disruption, increased cancer risk, and reduced immune function. Carbon or ion exchange water filters can help remove them. (More)

Why It’s Never Too Late to Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage

Sun damage that occurred when you were young often doesn’t show up on your skin until much later in life. However, this doesn’t mean that protecting your skin now is pointless. Experts say that changing your skincare routine to include more sun protection in mid-life or later can result in noticeable improvements, including fewer precancerous growths. Top recommendations include staying in the shade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., wearing protective clothing and a hat, using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and avoiding tanning beds. (More)
